After the Vancouver Skytrain map was done in Mario 3 style, I thought I’d make one for my original hometown of Calgary Alberta. This map features the C-Train, which is a Light Rail Transit system.

The map was done in the style of World 4, having already made Vancouver in the style of World 1. I could have made this in the World 1 style, but wanted a bit of variety. Maybe a World 1 version can be done later. The colors from World 4 are a bit loud, aren’t they?

UPDATE: Added a World 1 version:

Calgary is landlocked, so I couldn’t add any coin boats or warp pipes (to denote ‘off-screen’ travel), among the many items seen in the Vancouver one. Hopefully the addition of Mario himself  in a stetson hat will make up for that!

Also the map didn’t leave much room for the Mario 3 UI. The flowers were spaced in that fashion in World 4.

One of the more popular posts I had last year was this one, which was mostly attributed to the included Skytrain map. I was using it merely for reference, and it wasn’t that geeky. Thought I would remedy that!

Here is the Vancouver Skytrain map, done in the Super Mario Bros. 3 map style. I believe it does the trick, as it copies Translink’s square grid map seen in trains and platforms.

Originally I was going to make a station name Legend, where you’d look up the station number on the map and find the name in a list, but those are a pain to use! May as well label the stations, even if it does clutter up the map with text. Also was going to make this animated, but it was too sluggishly slow, even for only 3 frames. Ah well.

I wouldn’t have done this if the system was as complex as New York’s subway lines or London’s Underground rail. Vancouver’s system is comparatively small, but would require 16 Mario 3 screens to fit.
