Star Wars Desk

Star Wars desk by Dave's Geeky Ideas

I came across this old idea where I mentioned the landing pad from Return of the Jedi would make for a cool desk. I thought I’d put together a basic concept.

Originally this design had a bunch of catwalks connecting the two pillars underneath the desk, but I removed them because those would destroy your knees (Updated May 22/2019).

And yes, you could adorn this with figures and vehicles, making this a play set too.

Ouija Board Coffee Table And Carpet

Ouija Table coffee table and rug design by Dave Delisle davesgeekyideas

UPDATE: Almost a year later and I’m still getting a lot of interest in this design. If you absolutely want one, contact my friends at Tom Spina Designs for an estimate, they can build it for you. Original post as follows:

Happy Halloween! Today I bring you a not-so-spooky coffee table and carpet design based on the ol’ Ouija Board. These are for geeks who enjoy occult-themed fare like Supernatural and Buffy, and can also afford to shop at fancy furniture joints (none of that IKEA stuff).

The wooden coffee table features a glass fixture and wheels, of course. The carpet would ideally be as big as possible to help sell the illusion of an oversize game board. The one thing about the Ouija Board is that it’s a very nice design, and looks at home on the floor. You couldn’t say that for Monopoly or Sorry.

Revised Map Of California, Thanks To A Criminal Mastermind

Lex Luthor Map Of California

You can purchase a high-res poster of this map here.

Many theorize that the San Andreas Fault disaster could have been averted by that Superman fella, but he disappeared the very day a large chunk of California sunk into the Pacific Ocean. Fortunately a large corporation stepped up to rebuild what remained of the state. The lesson: corporations are the real heroes.

***

If you don’t get the gist I made this map to reflect an alternate reality where Lex Luthor’s scheme (from the first Superman movie, watch the scene here) actually worked. The result is a new California where almost every city is named after the greatest criminal mastermind.

I added a few more cities, decimated a few surviving cities (Fresno and Sacramento), and theorized that a massive barrier reef would form as a result of western California being underwater. Also his plan had called for grabbing a slice of Mexico, which I stayed true to. And yes, I granted Otis his dream city; I imagine Lex would’ve been in a good mood after his plan succeeded to permit Otisburg in the end.

Sentinel Robot Public Sculpture/Comic-Con Prop

X-Men Sentinel Robot Giant Head Sculpture Prop X-Men Comic-Con Cosplay Dave Delisle davesgeekyideas.com

This is something I that I thought would make for a fun (and geeky) public art sculpture: the severed head of a Sentinel robot from the X-Men comics. It would be neat in a public park, however I feel it would be very much at home on a university or college campus as a nod to the Xavier Institute.

In all honesty I doubt any city or school would permit such a geeky art installation, so I think this would be a neat prop that could be parked at comic conventions. Cosplayers and geeks could get their picture taken with the fallen robot, which would be a pretty cool keepsake.

This art installation/show prop could have lights in the eyes, which adds a bit of flavor. The Sentinel could blink back to life momentarily or stare angrily for prolonged periods of time.

Maybe that fella who built the life-size Skeletor could make this?

If you dig this please check out my take on geeky landmarks.

One last thing: the Sentinels have to be in the new X-Men: Days Of Future Past film, right? That would be awesome.

Zelda Lawn Ornaments

Zelda Lawn Ornaments Dave Delisle

So that last post got me thinking about how great it would be for a city park to adopt a Zelda layout, enough to get me thinking about doing a crowdfunding project (still mulling it over). My thoughts then migrated to something a little closer to home - the backyard to be exact. How cool would it be decorate the yard with Zelda-themed lawn ornaments in the style of item pickups? This is a million times better than gnomes!*

These would be ornaments with a little peg underneath that you’d plug into the lawn anywhere you want. It would look like Link invaded your property and struck down all the shrubs (he has issues).

I think this would be a fun DIY project for lawn-loving geeks. I have no idea how you’d make such large Rupees though (any thoughts out there?). For safety reasons I’d want the arrows made out of rubber (or something not stabby in general, as we’ve learned from lawn darts).

The Future Of Geek Landmarks

Geeky Landmarks Statues Places Destinations

As you know geeks are in the early stages of taking over the world. As a show of our dominance we are starting to leave landmarks in our wake that will leave future generations in complete awe of our empire.
