Hyperkin has announced a new N64 clone console, which will include HDMI like all of their other recent console releases. It reminded me of something I wanted 20 years ago, a device that would split up the game into 4 separate displays. Ideal for the many 4-player splitscreen games that graced the N64 and other consoles of the era.

Hyperkin Retron 77 Redesign

Hyperkin Retron 77 Redesign by Dave Delisle

Last year Hyperkin unveiled their Retron 77, an Atari clone system with HDMI output. It has a similar look to their recent Retron 1 HD and Supa Retron HD systems. The company makes good-looking clone systems so I’m a big fan of theirs.

I’ve been checking out these NES clone consoles that have come out recently for HD displays: the Retron 1 HD, Retro-Bit RES Plus, and the Gamerz Tek 8-Bit HD. I’m impressed that these complete systems all go for around $40. They all look decent, though I’m partial to the Retron design. That said I thought I’d put together my own design for a budget NES clone.

HD Game Boy System

I really want this design, because the only cartridges I own are of the Game Boy variety, and I’d like to play them on an HD television. Right now my only option to play GB games via HDMI is the Retron 5, but that system is overkill for my needs.

We Need A New Game Boy Handheld

I had somewhat of an ordeal acquiring a Game Boy Advance in the last few months. Rose Colored Gaming is sold-out (they can no longer acquire back-lit screens for GBAs), I also had no luck on Craigslist, a few used video games stores had nothing available. It was almost enough to make me quit!
