Star Wars Blu-Ray Case

Anticipation is high for the release of Star Wars on Blu-Ray this fall. A few weeks back, Lucasfilm unveiled all the details for the box set, as well as the package art. No fancy steelbook or collector’s case, as far as I can see.

As you may recall, I started on a Millennium Falcon case a long time ago. It didn’t sit right with me, so I abandoned the design. A few weeks back, talking about the Futurama case, the idea struck me to base the design on R2D2. It’s a perfect fit, as the astromech droid has been in all six films, and is very iconic. Plus R2′s design is so versatile for many products.

Because of the legs, disc trays that can swivel out 180 degrees are not in the cards. I then decided to make six telescoping trays that can clear the disc from R2′s main body entirely. Please note these would be manual trays, not motorized. There is also room for twenty trays if needed.

At about ten inches tall this won’t be a small case. It’s too bad they didn’t make Blu-Ray discs smaller! Despite the larger frame, this case would look great on the shelf or desk.

The design can include R2′s middle foot (I didn’t make that part), and allow him to lean back as well. Also the head can revolve. Some added LED lights and electronic sounds would make this a desirable collectible.

This fall’s Blu-Ray release does not include the original theatrical cut of the first trilogy. Also, all the films are being re-released in 3D. This means there are two more opportunities in the next few years to release the movies in a case like this.

  1. How do I got one??

  2. How do I get one??

    • I wish I had an answer for you. I’d have so many things made!

I did recently see a piggy bank R2D2 that is the perfect size. I am tempted to cut it up and make my own.

  3. So you are not going to release this?
