There Needs To Be A Video Game Based On REDLINE
Watched this anime film called REDLINE (which can be seen on YouTube - but for how long?), which is Akira meets Speed Racer, to put it mildly. It is truly insane - I don’t remember watching anything this visceral (Note: this film is not for the kiddies).
REDLINE is the name of a racing championship held in the distant future. The race is a no-holds-barred event, where cheating and combat is the norm. They decide to hold this particular REDLINE race on a planet called Roboworld, prompting the local government to respond by outlawing the race, and opposing it with all its military might. All heck breaks loose.
Hopefully this film yields a franchise, as I’d love to see more bizarre car races. But what I really want is to play a video game based on this film. It would provide a very different take on the racing game genre.
These races would feature (mild spoilers ahead): 1. Extreme speed - those Pod Racers from Star Wars seem slow by comparison. 2. Vehicular combat that would make Burnout seem like Paperboy. 3. A nitrous system that seems every bit as harmful as helpful. 4. Tracks that evolve to accommodate racers. 5. Land, air, and water travel along multiple routes within the tracks. 6. Tons of military opposition. 7. Onion-like vehicles to help evade grapples. 8. Every character and vehicle would be unique - nothing cookie cutter here. Some vehicles are massive, some tiny, some are animal-like.
This would make for an awesome video game. Even the film has a lot of gamey elements - the news clips seem more like the menu screen from a fighting game. I highly recommend you check it out. I think you’ll arrive at the same conclusion I did.
This film caught my eye a few years back, when a 10-minute version was released on the web. That ‘teaser’ of sorts was entirely original footage - nothing made it to the final film. I wish I could post it here for you, but it’s been removed from the interweb. Ah well.
