The handheld gaming market has been literally flooded with emulation handhelds these past few years, from the likes of companies such as Anbernic, Retroid, and Powkiddy, to name a few. These devices have largely been inspired by Nintendo’s handheld platforms ranging from the vintage Game Boy to the modern Switch Lite.
And while many devices are capable of playing Nintendo 64 games, there is yet to be a device that is uniquely tailored to the system. The vast majority of emulation handhelds have 4 face buttons, whereas the N64 has 6. One handheld I know of, the Anbernic ARC (which this design is based on, and I personally own as well), has 6 face buttons but no analog stick! So close. Yes you can remap buttons to get N64 to work on virtually any handheld but I would prefer a more bespoke approach like what is pictured above.
Seeing as there is a new handheld design announced literally every month, I figure it’s just a matter of time before we see something like this. But one important feature that should be included: multiplayer. Not sure if it would be Bluetooth or a link cable, but the Nintendo 64 is best played with friends.
