Avengers Collection Blu-Ray Case

Avengers Blu-Ray Case Collectors Edition Iron Man Hulk Thor Captain America 2012 Helicarrier DaveDelisle

It’s been a looong time since I posted a Blu-Ray case design (October 12th!), apologies for that. There was once a time this blog was quite popular for those. I chalk it up to not really buying packaged media anymore.

This is a case designed to hold a plethora of Marvel films that constitute The Avengers, both the team and their respective solo outings. It is based on the Helicarrier, which is the Avengers and SHIELD’s flying fortress (I’m sure you knew that).

This massive case is designed to hold at least 30 discs. Adding more trays to the main hull can grow that number to 50. Enough room for all your Marvel superhero movies (though I’d prefer something like this instead).

This is a really basic version of the Helicarrier. If I had more reference I could go to town making it look more authentic, but this should give you the rough idea. I feel like Doc Brown apologizing that it is not to scale.

One feature would be removable “wings”, which would act like individual cases. Very handy not just for everyday use, but it would make for smaller packaging if this became a product. Wouldn’t want a huge box hogging up all the shelf space at Best Buy.

Speaking of the size, I know it’s pretty big (the biggest I designed), but it’s not completely out of reason. I estimate 26″ long, 16″ wingspan, and 12″ tall.

This is a case designed to hold all current and future Avenger films. But what really bums me out for these films and other franchises that appear to be here for the next several years (e.g. Game of Thrones), is that releases a few years from now might not be issued on Blu-Ray or DVD. It’ll be sort of weird to have an incomplete collection.

Ideally, I would just sell this with the lone Avengers film. That would keep the cost down and allow people to populate it with the other superhero films they already own. There is ample room for superhero video games, that is for sure.

Films Deserving Of The ‘Special Edition’ Treatment

Alien Queen Ripley Aliens Newt Climax Storyboard Concept Sketch

By Special Edition I am referring to the act of updating a film by altering existing footage and/or adding new footage. The most obvious (and often cited) example would be the Star Wars Special Edition trilogy which debuted in 1997. The films suffered from the additions of pointless scenes, questionable CGI, and ill-conceived changes (Han not shooting first). Spielberg’s E.T. would follow suit a few years later. All of these releases were met with derision from fans. Read the rest of this entry

The Hobbit Blu-Ray Case Design

I originally set out to do this for Lord of the Rings, but seeing as I usually make cases for films yet to debut in Blu-Ray, I thought I’d make one for the yet-to-be-made Hobbit films.

Plus this design is more appropriate to The Hobbit, as it is this particular door (or the knocking on it specifically) is pivotal to the whole adventure starting. A long cautionary tale about unwanted guests if you ask me!

It is based on Bilbo’s door shown in the Lord of the Rings films. I preferred showing the interior side of the door for this case, so it would open like a book. Also the interior side looks much nicer. Whoever did the amazing set design for the LOTR trilogy should be commended.

A lot of my Blu-Ray designs so far are quite ‘busy’ and over the top. This one however, provokes me to ask how can they not run with this idea? It is just so perfect, in my opinion.

This would make an excellent book cover as well. It could open to reveal the title page, or some nice artwork. George Allen & Unwin, Ltd. - feel free to run with this too.

Speaking of artwork, I usually do just enough to get the idea across, but I enjoyed getting artsy-fartsy for this case. I imagine Peter Jackson and his WETA/Wingnut gurus could design a much nicer one if this ever became a reality.

I think you can have add some additional disc trays that can swing out. Also the box could open normally to get at additional discs or booklets too.

I also have to say the book-style LOTR extended version DVD sets really caught my attention some 9 years ago. Really got me interested in the art of package design.

If you like this, check out my other Blu-Ray case designs. My previous designs feature the Incredibles, Jurassic Park, and Back to the Future to name a few.
