Netflix Player

This was originally going to be my ColecoVision entry in the Consoles Reborn series, but I veered off course and decided to make this a dedicated Netflix player. How I arrived at this was simple: one of ColecoVision’s more novel features was the console had multiple cradles for the controllers (well, paddles actually) and other accessories on top. So I used the same approach here, but it would be too big a console for two controllers on top, and having that limit of two was odd in this day and age.

I thought the cradle idea was good for a single remote, so this would be ideal for a PVR, DVD, or Blu-Ray player. For fun I decided to make it a Netflix player. The company’s bright red color brought to mind a locomotive, so I thought I’d incorporate that theme.

The player sort of has a Hot Rod vibe as well. I was tempted to add gold chrome and make a ‘Tony Stark’ edition, but thought better of it. Many people have already modded their Xbox 360 consoles to look like Iron Man.

This still has a video game console look to it, which reminds me of another idea: what if Netflix offered customers old school games from the 8-bit and 16-bit era? Completely do-able in my opinion. Those games don’t need a lot of processing or graphical horsepower - just a few buttons and a D-Pad.
