NEO GEO Classic Console

Last week SNK teased a new NEO GEO console, which may be similar to the NES/SNES Classic Minis, however their teaser image implies something a lot bigger (going by the arcade stick shape), it could even be a Bartop Arcade Cabinet.

If they did follow Nintendo’s formula it would be two controller pads and a mini console, something like the concept I posted here. For the controllers I was inspired by the ones that came with the Sega Saturn. I would prefer a D-Pad but SNK likes their thumb sticks so I kept them here.

For the console, I enlisted an MVS cartridge, which are the cartridges used by the NEO GEO arcade cabinets. The label folds down to reveal access to the controller ports and power/reset buttons.

The graphics on the control panel and flap were inspired by the NEO GEO arcade cabinet. The front flap was inspired by the Super Retro Trio Plus console.

Because the console is a cartridge, it can be stored in a case. Which reminds me of a few designs I posted last year.

I’m looking forward to whatever SNK does end up releasing. Their 90’s home consoles and games were very expensive, even by today’s standards. A budget system that features many of their hits would be a must-have for many gamers, myself included.

Nintendo Classic Mini Carrying Case

Carrying cases are trendy again, thanks to the surging popularity of the NES and SNES Classic Mini consoles. Thought I would design a case that features a built-in monitor, a handy feature for gamers who want a compact gaming rig, or a means to game on the go. This case is about the size of a large lunchbox, and was inspired by portable record players.

It transforms from a suitcase into a retro TV, complete with a wheeled cart (the wheels are also functional in suitcase mode). The TV is a USB-powered portable LCD monitor. The flaps on the sides of the case clamp everything down in both suitcase and TV mode.

The transformation adds a great deal of versatility; theoretically you could always use this case, either as an entertainment center or means of transporting the game system. You never really have to remove the console.

There is a drawer beneath the system to store controllers and accessories, perhaps a power supply as well for mobile gaming.

Nintendo 64 Classic Design

The Nintendo 64 was revolutionary in countless ways, its impact still resonates in modern consoles and games. Unfortunately the N64 and its games have not aged as well as its predecessors, the SNES and NES. Some games like Mario 64 still hold up today, while others like Goldeneye 64 are difficult to enjoy after years of playing more advanced shooters.

Prediction: Game Boy Classic Is Next

Many folks believe the Nintendo 64 mini classic is next on deck after the SNES classic releases next month, but I’m pretty sure Nintendo wants to remain in the late 80’s/early 90’s era of their history and will opt to release a Game Boy classic handheld instead.
