The Xbox 720 Project - Help Design A Console And Controller

Xbox 720 Project Durango davesgeekyideas.com

With news that the next Xbox console is currently in development using the codename “Durango”, I’m sure a lot of us would love to get a peek at what’s going on behind the curtains in Redmond. So until Microsoft announces anything, the next best thing is to speculate and imagine what the final product will be.

I did as much with the 3DS and the Project Cafe (revealed to be the Wii U), making a few concepts based on the rumors which circulated at the time. While that is a lot of fun to do and I usually get a kick out of it, I thought this time it would be fun to open up the floor for readers and make a concept based on their input.

The plan is to make a full 3D mockup of a console and controller - strictly hardware here. Their appearance and functionality will be determined by you and other readers here at Dave’s Geeky Ideas.

How you can help: just leave a comment below and submit your idea to help shape the 720. Any idea is welcome, though try to keep it realistic. Treat this as a potential candidate for retail release.

The ideas for the 720 can be anything. Could be as small as a button layout suggestion to the color of the power cable or which ports you want on the back. Ideas can be large in scope too (e.g. I want a second hard drive bay!). Even the cosmetic appearance of the console is up to you.

You can even leave general feedback on what you like about the current 360, in the case there is something you’d like to see retained (like the shoulder buttons or analog sticks - anything really).

Some things to consider: the next console will still use media (discs), so that will need to be incorporated in some form. A built-in Kinect is also heavily-rumored, so that will also be included in some way. Beyond that you can go to town on this concept.

Guidelines: Please leave a comment below with your ideas or feedback. All submissions will be considered, no matter what. Some reader ideas may conflict with one another, so please no arguing or campaigning for your idea. Keep your comments friendly and respectful. You may enter as many comments as you want. Feel free to support ideas submitted by others. Any negative comments - like bashing another person’s idea - will be deleted.

Deadline: You have until midnight on Friday February 24th PST to submit your ideas. After that I will close the comments and do my best to craft a console and controller based on all the feedback.

Note: Not every idea will stick, so please don’t take offense if it is not used in the final design. I want to put the best foot forward from a collection of ideas, and that means the best overall representation of all those who contribute. I too will also contribute the odd idea but this will be completely done by committee.

I hope to have a complete concept built with numerous renders from every angle posted sometime between February 26th and 29th. This should be fun and I hope readers enjoy this project.
