The Hobbit Blu-Ray Case Design
Here is a simple design based on Bilbo’s door from the LOTR trilogy. I made it to be about the same height as a Blu-Ray jewel case here, but if I had a mulligan it would be about the same height and width as a CD case.
The Incredibles Blu-Ray Case
This Blu-Ray case design is based on the display case that encased the blue suit in Mr. Incredible’s office. In the front is a figurine of Mr. Incredible’s blue suit. It opens like a book to reveal the discs and booklet:
And that’s pretty much it! I think it would look great with the rest of your library.
If IKEA Made Geeky Furniture Part 9: Back To The Future
Simply put this ceiling lamp looks like the helmet worn by Doc Brown the first Back to the Future. It is tethered by that “suction cup” that the Doc affixed to Marty McFly’s head.
Besides the main bulb, there would be LED lights throughout this light fixture, making it look like a fancypants chandelier.
Star Trek Enterprise Blu-Ray Case
Here I was thinking I was so clever about this Star Trek blu-ray case design, but then it turned out it was already made as an actual product (see below). Not sure how I arrived at something so similar. Usually I do some checking to see if it exists or not, and the official product didn’t show up on my radar.
It was made as an exclusive for fans in Germany, Japan, and Australia, according to this article. Here it is:
There appears to be two different versions: the top one almost looks diecast, the lower one looks plastic. Both do the job, and I wouldn’t mind owning one myself. Too bad it wasn’t released for North American fans.
Batman: The Animated Series Blu-Ray Case
This design is a canister based on the cylinder-shaped parking spot in the Batcave seen in Batman: The Animated Series. A cover slides out of the way, allowing access to trays that swivel out for accessing the discs. There is probably enough room for the complete series and the related films.
Transformers: The Move Blu-Ray Case
(Note: this was updated April 12, 2014). This was my first-ever Blu-Ray case design, and the idea was to incorporate a Soundwave cassette tray and cassette toy into the front of a standard jewel case. I thought it would be fun to combine a toy and a movie, something that I’m starting to see more of nowadays (like Lego and DVD combos).
When I originally posted this in 2010, I was hoping to see something cool for the film’s 25th anniversary in 2011, and that didn’t happen! Maybe in 2016? I asked Shout Factory why they didn’t do a cool reissue of the film, and apparently that’s because Paramount owns the rights to all the Transformers films, and that includes the 1986 classic.
I’m very happy to revisit this post, and to also condense what was previously a few dozen images spread over several posts! I had no sense of brevity four years ago.
Geeky Gadget Wish List #6: BTTF Alarm Clock
This one is pretty self-explanatory: an alarm clock based on the ‘Time Coordinates’ input device from Back to the Future. This would include a dimmer for those irritated by light while trying to sleep (I can relate). It would be smart enough to display the next day for the alarm, but if you need it to skip a few days forward (like when you don’t want to wake up on the weekend) that should be easy to do.
(UPDATE Dec 6/2013: the above is an updated render. Originally this featured a cord that tethered into an iOS device but I got rid of it!).
