If IKEA Made Geeky Furniture Part 12: The Sandbox
The IKEA Geeky Furniture series are only designs, and do not exist (yet). They are not for sale. The images are meant to parody the IKEA catalog, hence the prices.
At first glance there is nothing geeky about this desk (well, computer desks are inherently geeky, but I digress), however this normal-looking desk enables geeky behavior. If you look closely you’ll see a model train set beneath the glass top.
This desk has a display case underneath the desk surface to store all your geeky wares, which is an amplification of glass desks that allow you to put photos or posters underneath the glass top.
Imagine all the things you could put in here! A Lego town perhaps. A Warhammer board game. A Civil War diorama. A formation of Stormtrooper figures. Me? I’d put a table hockey game in there, so I’d feel like I’m overlooking a hockey game.
This design could be applied to a dining table or coffee table. I think it would be cool to turn a functional surface into a display case that shows off your geek spoils. At least you’d have room for that train set.
Monsters Inc Blu-Ray Player
Initially I was going to make this a Blu-Ray case, but upon remembering how functional the Scare Floor Door System was in the film, I thought it would be better as a Blu-Ray/DVD player.
I’m reminded of that excellent R2D2 projection DVD player. If it were up to me, I would have made an ejecting lightsaber into the remote, instead of the Millenium Falcon.
The door swings open to reveal a vertical disc tray. The spinning mount rotates down to allow access to the disc. This is where I deviated, in that the door seen in the film swings away not toward (a necessary evil).
And while many don’t care for visible cables lying about, it would actually make sense for this industrial design.
The power canister was made into a remote. The light above the door is the power indicator (just like the film). The control panel to the left of the door features all the control buttons (power, play, fast forward, etc.).
Not only do I like the theme and functionality of this design, but it falls into my long-held belief that component electronics should be flat just like the flatscreen TV.
I’m glad I didn’t design this as a blu-ray case. I already have a Blu-Ray case based on a door. Don’t want to repeat myself too much!
Eternal Sunshine Fridge Magnet
Having Joel and Clementine from the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind on the front of your fridge would be the coolest magnet ever. Especially if you used them to hold notes for shopping lists and other helpful reminders - stuff you want to remember. Ha. Read the rest of this entry
Geek Bling Part 3: Howl’s Moving Castle
Earlier I invited readers to guess what film this ring appears in, and Dennis L. from Montreal correctly answered Howl’s Moving Castle. Howl wears two of these, and gave one to Sophie to help her find the way back to the castle.
I always strive to post ideas that do not exist yet, but this one does and is available for purchase. I should have Googled beforehand (usually do), but I assumed this was very obscure.
Apparently there is a huge cosplay following for this film, and the ring can be purchased here.
Also discounted from what I hoped to feature in the Geek Bling series: the Schwartz Ring from Spaceballs, which can be purchased on Etsy.
Another ring I had to scratch off the list is the one for Team Zissou (featured in The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou), which is also available on Etsy.
Geek Bling Part 2: Star Trek
This is a more humorous entry in the Geek Bling series - a pair of earrings based on those vile Ceti Eels from Star Trek II The Wrath Of Khan. You know - those alien creatures that burrow into the ear and set up shop in the brain stem? Quaint little parasites.
I think the lady Trekkers out there can appreciate this design:
I was hoping to post the clip from Star Trek that featured these horrific creatures, but none can be found. So much for traumatizing people who are not in the know. *sigh!*
Minor update: I came pretty close to having these made by a few jewelers, but no dice. Hopefully one day something can be done.
Geek Bling Part 1: Superman
Geek Bling is a followup to the Watch This series, wherein I try to address the shortage of bling geared towards fashionable geeks.
This one is pretty simple - a scaled-down replica of the Kryptonite chain that Superman wore (against his will) in the first movie. It was cleverly bestowed upon the Man of Steel by Lex Luthor.
It really pains me to say this, but the makers of Smallville did something right in allowing fans to buy a replica of the Kryptonite chain worn by Lana in the first few seasons of the show. Very forward thinking. But alas, nothing from the first film is currently available.
King Of The Hill Blu-Ray Case
This was a request from “Brooks”, a long-time fan of King of the Hill. Brooks is not too thrilled that Fox stopped selling DVDs of KOTH after season six, but he still holds out hope for a complete series release one day.
Brooks wanted to see a basic case with the unmistakable Hank Hill brown picket fence wrapped around the perimeter. Easy enough! I made a latch case for this 13-case set (above).
For a few alternatives I made one based on Strickland Propane (above left), and one based on a toolbox:
With the toolbox design it wouldn’t be hard to add a ‘Binford’ logo and designate this for a Home Improvement box set. UPDATE: Only 12 days ago Disney announced a 25-disc box set for Home Improvement, in a tool box no less. Granted there is not much resemblance to my really basic design.
