Fictitious Food Ideas
With news that South Park’s Cheezy Poofs will actually become a product available for Walmart shoppers next year, I thought I’d offer up some ideas for other fictitious food products.
In no particular order:
Duff Beer. This Simpsons’ staple is actually available in a few countries (Mexico, Germany), but Matt Groening refuses to license out the brand, in fear that it will incite kids to drink. How about Duff Root Beer? I think the Jones Soda Company would be all over that. The same could be done for Pawtucket Pat’s beer featured in Family Guy. Alamo Beer from King of the Hill too. Fox loves to shill beer, it seems.
Slurm. Futurama had a knife out for soda manufacturers with this spoof product featured in a classic episode, and the Slurm soda brand continues to be a recurring sight gag on the show. I’d like to think Mountain Dew could do a limited run of their soda adorned with Slurm branding.
Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs. The cereal of choice for Calvin and Hobbes, well, Calvin anyway. The ridiculousness of actual children’s cereal brands was an easy target for the comic strip. In fact you could say Calvin’s hyper behavior could be attributed to this very cereal. While I would not recommend the manufacture of this actual cereal as described (there is also a variant with marshmallows even), some sort of souvenir box would be great. This item will never happen - Bill Watterson’s stance against products based on Calvin and Hobbes is the stuff of legend. I still want a plush Hobbes tiger…for my niece. Heh-heh.
Powdered Toast. Alright this one would be impossible to do (powder that forms slices of toasted bread), but a gift canister featuring Powdered Toast Man (and maybe Ren and Stimpy too) would be a funny item to display.
Soylent Green. I think this should be offered in milkshake form - like those Shamrock shakes McDonald’s use to sell for St. Patrick’s day a long time ago. Mmmm Shamrock shakes. This could even double as that green milk from Star Wars. UPDATE: You can now buy Soylent Green crackers.
Battlestar Galactica Ambrosia. BSG has taught me many things, like the essential need for alcohol to help cope with difficult times. Certainly helped me get through Season 4 of the show, Ha. This liqueur of Admiral Adama and Saul Tigh would look great in your study.
Sweetums Snack Bars. This food company is a regular staple in Parks and Recreation. A bit obscure to be on this list, but I want these. Speaking of Parks, maybe some TV dinners based on Ron Swanson? Gotta be manly dinners.
A few real ones:
Stay Puft Marshmallows. I bought these from Thinkgeek. The caffeinated ‘mallows aren’t bad. The box they came in is a nice keepsake.
Popeye Spinach. That’s actually a thing (or it was). And a smart product tie-in, but for the love of me, who wants to buy canned spinach?
Ghostbusters Firehouse PC Tower Case
It’s been about several weeks since the last Ghostbusters idea, so why not a new one? Actually truth be told, I suggested this idea over a year ago, and merely presented a sketch drawing of the concept. The shape of the building makes for an excellent case mod. The Ghostbusters’ sign is the perfect power indicator light. You could even make all the windows opaque, for those who like to see the innards of their computer. I also originally suggested that the Ecto-1 car be used as a USB hub that is tethered to the building, and can be stowed in the garage. The front doors could even be opened to reveal USB or other ports. I’d also like to see the built-in power supply look like the Ecto Containment Unit, but only if the PSU was stationed at the bottom of the case. There are plenty of things that can be done with this concept.
For now it’s pretty basic. All the buttons are placed on the ledges. The disc tray is enclosed at the top. I didn’t include the vents, but they would be concealed within the window frames.
Monsters Inc Blu-Ray Update, Fathead Design
I feel the Scare Floor Door System from Monsters Inc. would make for an excellent Fathead design. Fatheads are those large decals which are affixed to walls, usually depicting sports teams or pop culture items. You can head to the official Fathead site and check out their selection.
Basically you’d have two large Fatheads flanking the door, and a smaller Fathead on top of the door. A bunch of small flower Fatheads would then complete the look:
The problem is you’d need a door that has a central location, and is not near a corner wall, allowing for both flanking Fatheads. But the beauty of this design is that you could place the Fatheads on either side of the door.
Eternal Sunshine Fridge Magnet
Having Joel and Clementine from the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind on the front of your fridge would be the coolest magnet ever. Especially if you used them to hold notes for shopping lists and other helpful reminders - stuff you want to remember. Ha. Read the rest of this entry
Geek Bling Part 3: Howl’s Moving Castle
Earlier I invited readers to guess what film this ring appears in, and Dennis L. from Montreal correctly answered Howl’s Moving Castle. Howl wears two of these, and gave one to Sophie to help her find the way back to the castle.
I always strive to post ideas that do not exist yet, but this one does and is available for purchase. I should have Googled beforehand (usually do), but I assumed this was very obscure.
Apparently there is a huge cosplay following for this film, and the ring can be purchased here.
Also discounted from what I hoped to feature in the Geek Bling series: the Schwartz Ring from Spaceballs, which can be purchased on Etsy.
Another ring I had to scratch off the list is the one for Team Zissou (featured in The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou), which is also available on Etsy.
Geek Bling Part 1: Superman
Geek Bling is a followup to the Watch This series, wherein I try to address the shortage of bling geared towards fashionable geeks.
This one is pretty simple - a scaled-down replica of the Kryptonite chain that Superman wore (against his will) in the first movie. It was cleverly bestowed upon the Man of Steel by Lex Luthor.
It really pains me to say this, but the makers of Smallville did something right in allowing fans to buy a replica of the Kryptonite chain worn by Lana in the first few seasons of the show. Very forward thinking. But alas, nothing from the first film is currently available.
If IKEA Made Geeky Furniture Part 11: Comic Book Rack
If IKEA Made Geeky Furniture is a series of concepts. None of these exist and are not for sale. The images are intended to parody the IKEA catalog.
Now that superhero movies are becoming a regular fixture, I thought it would be fun to create a DVD rack that looked like a comic book display. I recall seeing racks like this in grocery stores and pharmacies, usually covered in Archie and Richie Rich titles.
The top of the rack would feature a backlit sign, which could double as a lamp in your living space.
