The Greatest Toy Ever?
In light of the many recent articles I’ve seen highlighting the year’s best toys, I asked myself: “What would be the greatest toy ever?”
That’s easy. A toy that lets you make your own toys.
I predict that one day toy companies will issue affordable 3D printers aimed at kids, complete with a library of toys and accessories to print. The business model will not only rely on selling these printers, but the sales of additional 3D model files (from an online store) and plastic resin refills as well.
Wouldn’t it be cool if Hasbro released a printer that allowed you to print weapons and add-ons for your G.I. Joe and Transformer figures? Or even entire figures?
The scope of these printers would range from the small (creating parts to enhance existing toys), to the ambitious (creating entire toys or model kits). Either way, there is a lot of potential here for kids and hobbyists alike.
Physical Trophies And Achievements - Geek Spoils Part 2
In part 1 of the Geek Spoils series, I touched on the need for more geeky bravado that is in the same vein as a sports fan. And one of those bragging outlets would be the creation of trophies for geeks that celebrate (either genuinely or in humorous fashion) their geeky accomplishments.
The Hobbit Blu-Ray Case Design
Here is a simple design based on Bilbo’s door from the LOTR trilogy. I made it to be about the same height as a Blu-Ray jewel case here, but if I had a mulligan it would be about the same height and width as a CD case.

After I created The Incredibles Blu-Ray Tin Case, my thoughts turned to Mr. Incredible’s study. In his ‘office of solitude’ he has many cool things plastered on his wall. Magazine covers, photos of himself shaking hands with the Police Commissioner, and other pieces of memorabilia. His old Superhero uniform is shown prominently in a display case - the centerpiece of his prized collection.
This sort of showcasing is commonplace - for athletes and sports fans. The walls are adorned with team and sports paraphernalia. The shelves are lined with trophies. You may also find a framed sports jersey on the wall. I personally have a lot of hockey and football merchandise around my desk. Read the rest of this entry
The Incredibles Blu-Ray Case
This Blu-Ray case design is based on the display case that encased the blue suit in Mr. Incredible’s office. In the front is a figurine of Mr. Incredible’s blue suit. It opens like a book to reveal the discs and booklet:
And that’s pretty much it! I think it would look great with the rest of your library.
If IKEA Made Geeky Furniture Part 9: Back To The Future
Simply put this ceiling lamp looks like the helmet worn by Doc Brown the first Back to the Future. It is tethered by that “suction cup” that the Doc affixed to Marty McFly’s head.
Besides the main bulb, there would be LED lights throughout this light fixture, making it look like a fancypants chandelier.
If IKEA Made Geeky Furniture Part 8: Portal
If IKEA Made Geeky Furniture is a series of concept designs for geeks by a geek. These aren’t actual items for sale.
Probably be best to keep the LED rope light behind the mirror…you don’t want to see a blue or orange face staring back at you.
I made a few more items: A Portal ‘incinerator’ waste basket, and a companion cube dresser (complete with Portal mirror) - but they both looked really silly. They got the axe.
