Doctor Who Tardis Blu-Ray Case

This is is an update to one of my popular ideas from a few years ago, the Tardis Blu-Ray Case. This time I did my best to make the Tardis look more like its TV show counterpart. The old design started to bother me a bit, now that I have taken up the show since (which I love).

Still the same basic idea, a Tardis case that would contain a bunch of CD-like Blu-Ray cases. It would feature LED lights for the top light and signs.

This time it would have 2 doors instead of one. Because the main case would be full of Blu-Ray cases most of the time (unless you’re watching a Doctor Who marathon), I thought I’d incorporate an image of the Tardis interior along all the spines of the cases stored inside.

Also I did my best to conceal the door hinges, which are still external so the doors can open wider for the disc cases to have enough clearance for removal. Other than that it is the same old design!

In theory this could hold everything from the first 50 years of the show, something I’m sure many Whovians would like. Maybe the BBC can issue something similar to this one day?

Doctor Who Shakri Cube Clock

Doctor Who Clock IPhone Dock 2012 Dave Delisle davesgeekyideas.com

If you’re a Whovian you probably recognize this Shakri Cube, featured in a recent episode. Because of their countdown timer feature and small size, I thought they would be ideal for a clock. These cubes also open, so an iOS device dock might be a worthwhile addition. This could be a normal clock or alarm clock.

The only drawback would be needing a cord for power, which spoils the appearance of this looking somewhat like a prop replica. All the LED lights are not very optimal for battery operation. Instead it could be solar-powered or maybe sitting on a wireless charge pad/mat, allowing you to pick it up and juggle it or throw recklessly at co-workers.

I’d also include a couple of plain black cubes, should you want to stack them. Power could be re-routed through all the cubes, much like this neat Tetris light from Thinkgeek.*

Dr. Who Tardis Blu-Ray Case

Update: Be sure to check out the new and improved design! Original post as follows:

A confession: I’ve never watched Dr. Who. It’s a bit daunting to check out a series that’s been running for several years (the current iteration). Maybe one day I’ll check it out, as I enjoy the Torchwood spinoff (weird I know).

But I don’t have to be a fan of the show to know that people love the Tardis, the doctor’s time machine. It is disguised to look like a police phone booth. The Wikipedia page on the Tardis is a fascinating read.

I’m a bit surprised BBC hasn’t used this boxy machine for DVD or Blu-Ray release yet, as it would be an ideal design. I’m guessing they were held up by the same issue I was - how to integrate standard-size jewel cases into the frame. Well you can’t, as I have learned. It’s best to use cases that are more CD-shaped, to maximize the volume and storage of the Tardis. Fortunately I made some cases of that nature for my Dark Knight Trilogy design from way back when.

Some LED lights at the top of the case would complete the look. I believe the light on top pulses. That would look awesome in your entertainment center.

If you made the jewel cases very thin, you could store many seasons in this Tardis. It also would be ideal to leave some room for future growth. With that room you could store the top light and pyramid fixture inside when packaging and shipping these cases, as I am a stickler for efficient volume use.

This design reminds of the NBA2K10 special edition design, where they shipped the game in a locker with room to store other games. Very thoughtful design.

It occurred to me it has been awhile since I posted a Blu-Ray design, glad I remedied that drought.
