If IKEA Made Geeky Furniture Part 11: Comic Book Rack

Comic Book Rack For Movies

If IKEA Made Geeky Furniture is a series of concepts. None of these exist and are not for sale. The images are intended to parody the IKEA catalog.

Now that superhero movies are becoming a regular fixture, I thought it would be fun to create a DVD rack that looked like a comic book display. I recall seeing racks like this in grocery stores and pharmacies, usually covered in Archie and Richie Rich titles.

The top of the rack would feature a backlit sign, which could double as a lamp in your living space.

Star Wars Blu-Ray Case

R2D2 Star Wars Blu-Ray DVD Case 2011 Dave Delisle

This is a really basic design: R2D2’s body is essentially a canister of Blu-Ray discs (approximately a dozen discs). Each disc is accessible via an extending drawer:

Each drawer is manually opened. To ensure the disc is fully clear of R2’s body the drawers would telescope (almost like extending the dinner table to add a center cross piece).

This case would be on the bigger side: about 7″ wide and 9 - 10″ tall. Given its size I feel it has room for lights and sounds, which I’m sure most fans would love. This Astromech Droid would make for a nice display piece on anyone’s shelf.

The Princess Bride Blu-Ray + Book

The goal for this Blu-Ray design was to create a carbon copy of the book held by Peter Falk (who played the Grandfather/narrator) in the film The Princess Bride. Not only would this Blu-Ray case appear just like the prop in the film, but it would also include the classic book the film is based on.

Not only do you get a great film, but also the ability to be Peter Falk and read this to your rugrats if you so choose. It’s a rather novel package, ha-ha. Moving on.

Unfortunately, I could not see the cover art from the book used in the film. All I could gleam was one person clad in white, another in black. The two are framed in a nice fancy border, the book is a greenish brown. So I decided to use some artistic license for the cover.

I haven’t read the book myself, but from what Wikipedia has described William Goldman has added additional content to the book in the form of an epilogue which sets the foundation for a sequel. This expands on the original story which was adapted for the film, making the book the definitive special feature for this film. Or you could say the film is the special feature for the book.

HAL 9000 Webcam

HAL 9000 webcam design by Dave's Geeky Ideas

This is another no-brainer product idea, as many people have thought about this (perhaps even you), but I wanted to post this idea for the record. There needs to be a webcam/camera based on the sinister HAL 9000 from the Space Odyssey films. Read the rest of this entry

Autobot Blaster Mini Bookshelf Stereo System

Autobot Blaster Stereo Transformers 2011

A few years ago they released an MP3 player based on Soundwave, but personally I wish they offered a stereo system based on his Autobot counterpart, Blaster. He would just look at home on the bookshelf or entertainment unit.

It doesn’t even have to be an official product, just the basic shape and colors, and fans could add their own Autobot insignia.

As far as features, cassettes are pretty much dead, so a cassette-like display would be fun. Standard features like a CD player and iPod dock could also be included. I’d probably include an remote that looked like a cassette.

Ghostbusters Ecto-1 Alarm Clock

Who wouldn’t want to wake up to the Ecto-1’s siren and lights? This alarm clock features the famous Ghostbusters’ car with an LED sign (similar to the car’s appearance in Ghostbusters 2). Probably a bit too ornate to park on the bedside table, but I very much want one.

The Last Starfighter Bluetooth Headset

Last Starfighter Gadget

This item crosses a bunch of things off my to-do list of ideas, namely:

1) A gadget based on The Last Starfighter - particularily the device Alex uses to call Centauri (pictured below inset), 2) A bluetooth headset gadget, which is long overdue here on this blog, 3) An earbud design that folds into an enclosure.

I remember flip phones being a hot item several years ago, now they are pretty much extinct. This gadget uses that flip design because I wanted to have an earbud that can be encased in some form for hygienic reasons. Also the flip design is retro, much like the film it embodies.

Admittedly, it won’t look nice and sleek when in use, but it will be nice and compact when folded up so you can easily throw it in your pocket.

I also think this Starfighter device would make for a cool key fob or remote of some kind, perhaps a mini cellphone. I could never really nail down an appropriate use for it. This will do for now!

Note: On second thought I should have put the hinge on the top, so when you wear it the display doesn’t appear upside down. Ah well.
