Nintendo Wii U Makeover

Wii U Makeover 2011 Dave Delisle

To me the appearance of a game console is something of an art - well, a lost art. Console design has been languishing these past several years, as every console maker opts to release piano black or ivory white slabs that exclaim ‘adult contemporary’. Gone are the colorful palettes and unique designs that game consoles were once known for. Read the rest of this entry

Vending Machine Arcade Cabinet Hybrid

Dr Pepper Arcade Machine 2011

The arcade machine is a dying breed, at least in North America. Reduced to being tucked away in the darkest recesses of malls and airports, this endangered species lost it’s luster thanks to home consoles and portable handhelds.

The habitat once populated by these arcade cabinets is now home to another thriving species - the vending machine. Be it soda or chips or toiletries, people love these dispensaries and they are not going away anytime soon. Read the rest of this entry

Zelda Lamp And Clock Combo

Majoras Mask Clock Moon Tower 2011

While Ocarina of Time is a celebrated benchmark in gaming, it had a direct sequel that doesn’t get nearly as much attention - Majora’s Mask. Despite the lack of hype, this game did have a lot of memorable imagery, such as that creepy moon that was in the sky, constantly inbound to destroy the planet.

So I thought this menacing backdrop for Majora’s Mask would make for a cool lamp, accompanied by the central Clock Tower as, well, a clock.

The moon lamp would change colors, and the clock would feature all the bell sounds heard in game. Like everything I post, this is just the basic idea. The base could feature a larger section of the town, and perhaps a few figures from the game as well.

Admittedly, the moon is too creepy for many. I do think many Zelda fans can appreciate how this encapsulates the classic game, recreating a pivotal/iconic moment. I’d want one on my desk!

Super Mario Toaster

Super Mario Toaster

Super Mario Toaster. Does anything more need to be said?

Well, maybe one thing. I’d make it so each side of bread would have a different image, like the fire flower, star, and coin.

Insert Coin Game Console

This is a fun concept: a video game console in the shape of a giant “Insert Coin” slot, much like what you’d find on an arcade cabinet. The coin slot operates as the disc slot.

Super Mario Anthology Case Package

My first video game package design! Seems overdue, huh? Why not start with Mario, the iconic video game mascot. Nintendo isn’t really a company known to issue special edition cases, opting for a low-key approach - like making the jewel case for New Super Mario Bros Wii into a red color.

Apologies if this one seems a little lazy, but I think it suits Mario perfectly. You have the infamous ‘Question Mark’ cube housing several coin-shaped jewel cases. This would be perfect for an anthology of Mario games, as there is certainly enough of those in existence.

I should state I am not a fan of cylindrical jewel cases. Ever since that Total Recall edition from a decade or so ago, I try to steer clear of that design, unless it’s cool (like this or this). As a gold coin it works and is relevant to the theme.

Physical Trophies And Achievements - Geek Spoils Part 2

Duck Hunt Trophy

In part 1 of the Geek Spoils series, I touched on the need for more geeky bravado that is in the same vein as a sports fan. And one of those bragging outlets would be the creation of trophies for geeks that celebrate (either genuinely or in humorous fashion) their geeky accomplishments.
